Equine-Assisted Reading and Learning Program

Our Equine-Assisted Reading and Learning Program combines literacy instruction, horses, nature, art, and hands-on exploration in a welcoming ranch environment. Designed for children with diverse learning needs, the program helps participants strengthen reading, writing, vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence while developing a meaningful connection with horses.

Lessons take place around the ranch and in the woods, where students explore nature, observe horses, and connect new words with real experiences. Activities may include:

• Reading with horses in a calm, encouraging environment.
• Exploring the woods and ranch while identifying, reading, and writing words related to animals, plants, trails, and farm life.
• Drawing words on horses or art media to make spelling and vocabulary visual, creative, and memorable.
• Learning horse concepts such as anatomy, colors, breeds, equipment, care, movement, and behavior.
• Writing about ranch experiences through sentences, stories, journals, labels, and descriptive exercises.
• Using flash cards, pictures, movement, and visual associations to reinforce phonics, sight words, spelling, vocabulary, and comprehension.
• Participating in hands-on horse activities that encourage communication, sequencing, following directions, and critical thinking.

Option 1 – Instruction incorporates visual and multisensory strategies inspired by Dianne Craft’s Right Brain Learning System, based in Colorado. These techniques pair words and concepts with pictures, color, movement, imagination, and meaningful experiences to support memory and understanding. Activities are adapted to each learner’s strengths, interests, and educational needs.

Option 2 – Students bring their school materials to incorporate into reading lessons. Private sessions are required to meet this accommodation.

The program’s goal is to make learning feel purposeful and enjoyable. With horses as supportive learning partners and the ranch as an interactive classroom, students can build academic skills, curiosity, independence, and a lasting love of reading. Here, learning isn’t just something we do—it’s something we experience, feel, and grow through, one hoofbeat at a time.
